TEXTILES

Using scrap wood, I built a loom modeled after photos of traditional looms found online. I made a reed out of popsicle sticks, heddles out of pieces of string and warps from dowels. I expanded the loom to 4 heddles so I can make a twill weave as well as a double-wide piece of fabric.

This example demonstrates the expanded capacity of the loom I made by increasing the number of heddles from 2 to 4.

This was my first finished piece of fabric made on the 2 heddle loom.

I taught myself to crochet and enjoyed creating my own designs by testing the size and adding stitches when needed.

I learned to knit and experimented with complex stitch patterns

I've always loved knots and learned to create decorative work using complex knot designs.

I tested a very old weaving technique still used in today in parts of South America. I tied all the warps between a strap on my back and a fixed object and used a comb as a beater to make the wefts line up.

I made straps with chevron designs using my fingers to weave the strands of yarn together based on a Native American technique I learned about in a book.

I love finding found objects in nature and creating baskets. This one is made of twigs and dried vines.

I learned to sew and made simple bags from outdoor fabrics and sail cloth.
